The Global Citizens’ Assembly for People and Planet

A Global Citizens’ Assembly for COP30 and Beyond.

The Global Citizens’ Assembly for People and Planet, is being organised by Iswe Foundation and partners, with the guidance of the Global Citizens’ Assembly Network. The aim of the Assembly, which is being backed by the Government of Brazil, is to shape COP30 and lay the foundations for a new, game-changing institution.

The Global Citizens’ Assembly for People and Planet was officially launched during New York Climate Week 2024 against the backdrop of the UN Summit of the Future. The launch event was organised by the Climate Emergency Collaboration, Iswe Foundation, and the New York Society for Ethical Culture, and supported by the Government of Brazil, the Wellcome Trust, and Avaaz. It featured leading thinkers and activists including Ana Toni (Vice-Minister for Climate Change, Brazil) and Laurence Tubiana (CEO of the European Climate Foundation and key architect of the Paris Agreement) who recently made the case for an assembly that would “bring citizens together from every country, not just to chart a collective path forward, but to reimagine our politics”.

The Global Citizens’ Assembly for People and Planet will consist of:

  • A core assembly that anyone on Earth could be selected for. The core assembly will being together a snapshot of the world’s population, selected by lottery.

  • Community assemblies that anyone on Earth can participate in. People will be invited to run their own assemblies. The results will  then be aggregated through a digital platform to inform the conclusions of the core assembly.

  • A campaign that will allow creatives and influencers to raise public awareness of and build widespread support for and participation in the assembly.

The Coalition for a Global Citizens’ Assembly will work together to enhance the impact of the Assembly.
